    KIRWANS 1827-2003 Hardcover – January 25, 2025

Available as hardcover, paperback and Kindle.

This second edition corrects some facts and typos and eliminates duplication in the first edition. Tables are edited, and the “occupations” column has been deleted from table 7. A list of figures and tables has been added. New facts have been added such as Benny Kirwan’s date of birth and his last resting place. Cemeteries are added to images of gravestones. New family members are also added: Abraham Rabow’s two sons, Julius and Jacob, and Abraham’s brother Jacob. There are three new figures. Any residual factual errors or typos are entirely the fault of the author.

Abraham and Malvina Rabow are the first Kirwans to land in England, in 1869. Samuel and Gerty Katz are the last, settling in Liverpool, in 1905. The British Aliens Act of 1905 prevented further immigration of Jews to the United Kingdom. Many continued to relocate to other countries such as the USA, Canada, South Africa and Israel. This Kirwans history begins in 1827 when Rabor Ele Katz was born in Novgorod and the last entry is February 2025, two hundred years later, written from the United States. The generation before Rabor Katz, “G minus one,” can be partially named based on the Jewish names: “ben” and “bat” meaning “son of” and “daughter of” respectively. Their dates of birth would have been sometime in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The focus of the “Kirwans” is a story of Jewish migration when Liverpool was the second most important city in England and the largest UK-based Trans-Atlantic seaport. Around 1922, the British Empire had reached its maximum size, covering approximately a quarter of the Earth's land surface. This history is set against this backdrop of British industrial and military supremacy.
