KIRWANS, WORLD WAR I & II Hardcover – June 6, 2025

The Kirwans, World War I & II. The history of the Kirwan Family and their experiences before and during World Wars I and II. Wolf Ginsberg served in the Russian 4th Infantry Division in the 1890s. After emigrating from Eastern Europe to seek opportunity and religious freedom in the United Kingdom and the U.S.A., Kirwans were again facing enlistment in the British and United States Armed Services. In World War I, Louis Ginsberg fought in Palestine as part of the 1st Judeans detachment of the 39th Fusiliers. Bertie and Simon Endbinder were enlisted into the British Army. Simon served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, manning an Anti-Aircraft battery. In World War II, Benny Kirwan and Louis Ginsberg both volunteered for the Civil Defence Service. Harry and Matty Kirwan were drafted into the Air Force as Ordinary Airmen. In 1945, Morry Kirwan graduated from Liverpool University Medical School and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps, beginning more than a forty-year long medical career which would later see him become the Senior Police Surgeon of the Merseyside Police Force. Harry Haft, a relative by marriage, was killed in action in December 1943, fighting with The Lancashire Fusiliers attached to the 50th Royal Tank Regiment as they fought the Germans at the Gustav Line. Harry is buried in a military cemetery in Abruzzo. The Kirwans' military service is a lens through which to view their story of emigration and settlement in a new country with fresh opportunities but also the old familiar problems of prejudice and antisemitism, which in Liverpool, motivated them to change their names from Cohen to Kirwan and Ginsberg to Grant. This is an engaging story and an important historical record which documents the Kirwans' trials and successes from the late nineteenth century until the peace that followed World War II.
