An Early Review of Laurence Kirwan's Artwork
This personal studio note recalls Laurence Kirwan sharing his early paintings with an old friend and receiving a memorable response. It offers a candid glimpse into the experience of showing new artwork to someone whose opinion matters.
I started painting in July of 2025. In January 2026, I thought I would show my work to a schoolboy friend, Stephen, from Liverpool, who is an Art History pundit. His comment was: "Slightly reminds me of what Dr Johnson said “Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.”
Stephen is the gentleman holding two glasses of fizz. I don't know who the man is with the martini. I guess they just saw my Art and are having a good laugh.
