About This Work

East German Volkpolizei (People's Police), Visor Cap, January 1989. Photograph

The hat featured in the image is an original East German Volkspolizei (People's Police) visor cap rather than an East German Border Guard cap.

While both branches utilized distinct shades of green in their uniforms, they can be easily differentiated by the construction of the hat body:

Volkspolizei (People's Police): The entire cap—including the top crown—is constructed from a solid dark green wool.

Grenztruppen (Border Guards): The Border Guard visor caps utilize the standard stone-grey (Steingrau) wool top paired with a green velvet band and green piping.

The specific configuration seen here—featuring a black chincord and a single-piece stamped silver metal wreath insignia—denotes that this piece was issued to an Enlisted Man (EM) or Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) under the East German Ministry of the Interior (Ministerium des Innern).
