The Royal West Surrey Regiment.
Home Service Helmet Plate. Victorian

Top Row Left: Victorian Home Service Helmet. The Royal West Surrey Regiment. Photograph

Key Features
Design: Eight-pointed starburst in gilt brass, surmounted by a crown.
Center: Paschal Lamb (the symbol of the regiment) on a red velvet backing, encircled by the Garter bearing the motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense".
Lower Scroll: Inscribed with the regimental title "The Royal West Surrey Regiment".
Era: Late 19th century Victorian period
Top Row Right:
  • British 24th Regiment of Foot (2nd Warwickshire) foreign service pith helmet plate, featuring a brass-gilded starburst of laurel leaves, a central garter with the numeral "24", a Victorian crown on top, and a sphinx resting on an "EGYPT" scroll at the base.

    • Unit: 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot (later the South Wales Borderers).
    • Era: Famous for its service during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, including the defense of Rorke's Drift and the Battle of Isandhlwana.
    • Design: Stamped brass or gilt-wash plate worn on home and foreign service pith helmets during the late 19th century.

Bottom Left:
Model 1881 Enlisted Dress Artillery Helmet Plate.
Key Identification Features
Branch Design: The plate features the iconic stylized American eagle with crossed cannons positioned behind the shield, confirming it belongs specifically to the Artillery branch
Historical Era: These stamped-brass insignia plates were worn on the tall, spiked blue cloth dress helmets utilized by the United States Army during the late Indian Wars and Spanish-American War eras (circa 1881–1902)
Bottom Right:
U.S. Army Model 1881 Enlisted Dress Helmet Plate for the Infantry.

Design Evolution Elements
The four-part image captures the specific progression of the American military eagle plate from the late 19th-century Indian Wars era to modern service caps:
The Top Row shows the evolution into 20th-century and modern service cap insignia (USAAF) officer gilt on the left vs. USAF officer silver variations on the right, where the eagle layout became more condensed and uniform.
The Bottom Left shows a variant of the Model 1881 plate featuring crossed cannons, which designates the Artillery branch rather than infantry.
The Bottom Right features the definitive Model 1881 pattern with crossed rifles tucked behind the central shield, which uniquely identifies the Infantry branch. Unlike the earlier Model 1872 version, the 1881 standard streamlined the "E Pluribus Unum" ribbon directly into the eagle's beak to make the stamped brass structure less prone to breaking during active field wear
