About This Work

US Army Air Force WW2 Crusher "50-Mission" Cap. Tropical Cover.

Authentic World War Two US Army Air Force Bancroft Crusher. Manufactured by Bancroft. The "crusher" style became iconic among American aviators who would remove the internal stiffener to create the distinctive, casual look that defined the swagger of USAAF pilots and allowed them to fit their aviation headphones over their cap during missions.

Historical Significance:

  • Worn by US Army Air Force officers during World War Two
  • Bancroft was a premier manufacturer of military caps during the 1940s
  • The "crusher" style was achieved by removing the grommet, allowing pilots to fold and shape the cap for a more relaxed, personalized fit
  • This style became synonymous with the confident, daring spirit of American aviators
  • Featured in countless period photographs and films depicting WW2 airmen

The Bancroft Flighter is the definitive, iconic WW2 USAAF officer's "crusher" visor cap.

The vintage WW2 USAAF HS-33 and HS-23 aviation headsets (which used the HB-7 spring-metal headband) were famously worn by bomber and fighter pilots directly over their soft "crusher" caps.

Core Specifications & Components

Headband (HB-7): Spring-loaded, adjustable metal frame covered in leather, designed to hold ear receivers snugly against the ears or fit into leather/canvas flight helmets.

Receivers / Earphones:
  • HS-33 (Low Impedance): Utilized ANB-H-1 bakelite magnetic receivers (manufactured by Western Electric, Utah, Rola, etc.) with an impedance rating of roughly 300 to 600 ohms. Introduced around 1943 for newer radio systems.
  • HS-23 (High Impedance): Utilized R-14 dynamic/magnetic earphones with a high impedance rating of approximately 4,000 ohms. Standardized earlier in 1938.
Wiring & Plugs:
  • HS-33 Loom: Connected via an integral cord terminating in a distinct red PL-354 (or PJ-054R) single-prong jack plug.
  • HS-23 Loom: Connected via a brown braided cord terminating in a black PL-54 jack plug.

Cushions: Equipped with rubber foam or sponge cushions (such as MC-162-A or MX-41/AR rubber/chamois covers) for passive ambient noise isolation inside loud aircraft like the B-17 Flying Fortress.
