History of the "Donald Duck" Flat Hat

  • Origins: Introduced in the 1800s, the flat cap was a staple of the US Navy enlisted dress blue uniform for generations.
  • The Nickname: It earned the popular nickname "Donald Duck hat" due to its distinct visual similarity to the cap worn by the iconic Disney cartoon character.
  • Service Life: The cap saw extensive action through World War I and WW2 before the Navy officially retired it from service on April 1, 1963. It was largely phased out in favor of the iconic white "Dixie Cup" canvas hat.

This image displays a classic vintage WW2 U.S. Coast Guard enlisted sailor's flat hat, commonly referred to as a "Donald Duck" cap due to its distinctive wide, crown-like design.

The cap features a prominent black tally band with "U.S. COAST GUARD" embroidered in gold bullion lettering. This specific style was standard issue for lower-enlisted service members during the mid-20th century before being phased out of everyday service uniforms.
