About This Work

The Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) is a non-combat uniformed service consisting of Commissioned Officers only. Its uniforms and ranks are based on the US Navy.

The USPHS traces its origins to 1798 when Congress created the Marine Hospital Fund to care for sick and disabled merchant seamen. In 1871, John Maynard Woodworth — a prominent Union Army surgeon who served under General William T. Sherman — was appointed the first Supervising Surgeon and modeled the service along military lines. By 1889 the Commissioned Corps was formally established, giving medical officers the same rank and pay scale as the U.S. Army. Today it is the largest public health program in the world.
