About This Work

USAAF Crusher Pilot Officer Visor Cap

The Bancroft Flighter is the definitive, iconic WW2 USAAF officer's "crusher" visor cap. Manufactured by the Bancroft Cap Company, it was explicitly designed to be lightweight, flexible, and completely packable.
Key Characteristics & Construction
  • The "Crusher" Mechanism: Unlike standard dress caps that featured a rigid cane, wire, or steel grommet support in the crown, the Flighter utilized a soft, flexible reinforcement structure. This allowed pilots to comfortably wear heavy communication headphones directly over the cap while flying.
  • The Visor Peak: Built with a highly pliable, soft leather or canvas peak that could be folded, rolled, or stuffed into a pocket or flight bag without cracking or losing its structural shape.
  • Materials: Commonly found in olive drab (OD-51 "chocolate") or khaki tropical wool elastique, featuring a mohair central band and a gold-and-silver officer's crest badge.
Authentication & Dating Details
When authenticating or dating an original wartime Bancroft Flighter, minor construction details are critical to determining its production window:
  • The Patent Marking: Early-to-mid wartime production caps feature a "Patent Pending" stamp on the interior sweatband or moisture shield.
  • The Patent Number: In February 1945, Bancroft was officially granted its structural patent. Caps manufactured at the very end of the war or during the immediate post-war era feature the fully registered patent number stamp rather than the pending designation.
