US Army Officer service cap badge, famously worn by United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) pilots on their "crusher" caps during World War II.

Visual and Design Details

Design Elements: The badge features the Great Seal of the United States, depicting an American bald eagle with outspread wings, a shield on its breast, a banner in its beak reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and a starburst cluster of 13 stars directly above its head.

Crusher Cap Connection: During WWII, USAAF pilots intentionally removed the stiffening structure from their service caps so they could comfortably wear their communications headsets over them. This gave the cap its iconic, slumped, "crushed" appearance

When the Air Force was established as a separate service branch in 1947, it carried over much of its heritage from the U.S. Army Air Forces. This is why the design features the Great Seal of the United States—the precise same coat of arms used for U.S. Army officer caps (shown on the top left).

However, to differentiate the branches and match the new "sky-oriented" uniform identity, the Air Force adopted the insignia strictly in silver (oxidized or rhodium-plated white metal) rather than the Army's traditional gold/gilt brass finish.

The Bottom Left shows a variant of the Model 1881 plate featuring crossed cannons, which designates the Artillery branch rather than infantry.

The Bottom Right features the definitive Model 1881 pattern with crossed rifles tucked behind the central shield, which uniquely identifies the Infantry branch. Unlike the earlier Model 1872 version, the 1881 standard streamlined the "E Pluribus Unum" ribbon directly into the eagle's beak to make the stamped brass structure less prone to breaking during active field wear
