US Army Nurses Arrival in Scotland, 1944 — Military Art

On 15 August 1944, a group of 63 African American US Army nurses arrived at Greenock in Scotland. Their disembarkation is a meaningful moment in the history of military nursing, World War II service and the experiences of Black women in uniform.

This focused collection includes original artwork, fine art prints and historical imagery inspired by that arrival. Explore how the scene is presented through painted and photographic forms, and consider the people behind the uniforms rather than treating the event as a purely decorative image. The individual works offer an opportunity to remember an often-underrepresented part of wartime service history.
